I was very surprised by this book, when I began reading it I thought it was going to be another girl meets boy, boy wants girl, girl will run and cause drama. When I wasn’t very far into it, I realized this was a book of VERY strong and determined characters who weren’t going to surrender to anyone.
Cage is the kind of man you dream of having. Sexy, handsome and a natural-born protector. He has to feel needed and he needs to protect those who aren’t strong enough to protect themselves. He is also a man who carries a broken heart and wounded soul. He had lost very important people in his life and he was determined to protect those who remained. He was facing the wedding that was going to force him to hand over his best friend to another man. What was he going to have in his life after that? He had sex just to have sex and he wasn’t very picky in who he did it with, that was until he met Meli………….she made sex and relationships have meaning . He also has a crazy ex sex buddy that just won’t go away.
Meli had her own nightmares and guilt to deal with. She had watched her mother and sister be used by men and she vowed that she would never be in that situation. She carried the guilt of not being able to protect those two important women in her life, but she had to accept, some events can not be changed. She was struggling to make enough money to support herself, mother and nephew while trying to find some comfort. There was no way this strong woman would need a man like Cage and he wouldn’t want her, she was just average in her opinion. It was awesome to watch her lower her walls for Cage and allow him in. She had the same dedication to family as Cage did, but what she didn’t know is they shared a certain nightmare from the past. If Cage shares this information with her, he is sure it will send her running and hating him forever. If he doesn’t and she finds out, she will leave him because he wasn’t honest with her.
Once all of the lies have been exposed, the truth is all they have left and it wasn’t pretty. I loved watching as they sorted out what they needed to accept and what they had to let go of. There were tender moments that melted my heart, sad moments that left me in tears. The author didn’t disappoint and even gave us an OMG moment when we finally were able to connect the dots and see who was behind all of this destruction that Cage and Meli had to overcome.
This wasn’t just a love story, it was a struggle with intense sadness, drama and action. I had a very difficult time putting the book down because there were just no time that the story lagged. The author did a wonderful job weaving together so many supporting characters into the story that kept the suspense and plot going. This could be read as a stand alone since she gave us plenty of back ground to the characters but yet she held back enough that made me want to read every book involving these people, I needed more. This is a HEA ending, but it is anything but boring and happy during the journey to the end. I highly recommend this book and author. I will certainly be reading more of her stories because I love how she kept me invested and involved.
